Exodus 20:4-6

Exodus 20:4-6
You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am fa jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

John Calvin: “the human heart is a perpetual idol factory.”

Outline
I. The Second Commandment
II. The Jealousy of God

I. The Second Commandment

Verse 4- “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

Exodus 32:4-6- “And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden1 calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.” 6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”

Deuteronomy 4:15-18- “Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16 beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth.”

John 4:24- God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

AW Tozer: What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.

Isaiah 40:18- “To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?”

verse 25- “to whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? Says the Holy One.”

II. The Jealousy of God

Verses 5-6- “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands2 of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

J. I. Packer, “it is a praiseworthy zeal on his part to preserve something supremely precious”

Deuteronomy 4:24- For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Isaiah 48:11- For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.

Deuteronomy 24:16- “Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.”

James 4:5-6 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Verse 6- “but showing steadfast love to thousands2 of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
